چکیده

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon. Prebiotics are reported for various activities, particularly for protective role in colon cancer and inflammatory intestinal conditions, immune modulation, curbing obesity, metal sequestering, glucose intolerance, hypolipidemic activity, antimicrobial activity and anticarcinogenic activity. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are reported to have a prominent role in the alteration of cecal microbiota, cecal pH, cecal weight, and serum lipid levels, and also an inhibitory effect on precancerous colon lesions. Lactulose and its metabolites draw water into the bowel, causing a cathartic effect through osmotic action. Mannanoligosaccharides influenced the solubility of nutrients by their higher water binding capacity and also increase calcium absorption and possibly magnesium absorption, while promoting intestinal bacteria. Inulin has a minimal impact on blood sugar and in sharp contrast to fructose it is not insulemic and does not raise triglycerides, making it generally considered suitable for diabetics. Isomalto-oligosaccharides favorably modulate serum cholesterol in normal cholesteremics as compared to FOS and inulins which are more active only in hypercholesteremics. Prebiotics are mostly combined with foods and beverages and incorporated into biscuits, confectionery, cereals, dairy products, drinks, infant formula feeds and weaning foods. With increasing significance of gastrointestinal health and its positive effect on prevention of various other diseases, role of Prebiotics alone or in synergistic combination with probiotics is now well recognized and studies are ongoing regarding development of synergistic formulations utilizing various polymers.

Effects of Probiotics and Prebiotics in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) including most important forms; Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC); are chronic diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract with unclear etiology and pathology. The role of gut microbiota has recently been considered as major a factor, since altered microbiome or "dysbiosis" is a key player in the protracted course of inflammation in IBD. Howeve...

Therapeutic Application of Synbiotics, a Fusion of Probiotics and Prebiotics, and Biogenics as a New Concept for Oral Candida Infections: A Mini Review

Candida is a major human fungal pathogen causing infectious conditions predominantly in the elderly and immunocompromised hosts. Although Candida resides as a member of the oral indigenous microbiota in symbiosis, some circumstances may cause microbial imbalance leading to dysbiosis and resultant oral candidiasis. Therefore, oral microbial symbiosis that suppresses the overgrowth of Candida is ...

Induction of regulatory T cells: A role for probiotics and prebiotics to suppress autoimmunity.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are comprised of a heterogeneous population of cells that play a vital role in suppressing inflammation and maintaining immune tolerance. Given the crucial role of Tregs in maintaining immune homeostasis, it is probably not surprising that many microbial species and their metabolites have the potential to induce Tregs. There is now great interest in the therapeutic po...

Role of Probiotics and Prebiotics in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Children

Introduction: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are non-fatal, unknown etiology disorders with absence of a structural or biochemical explanation and accounting for up to 50% of gastroenterology referrals. Infant regurgitation, rumination and cyclic vomiting constitute the vomiting disorders. Abdominal pain disorders are classified as: functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome (...

Therapeutic Potential to Modify the Mucus Barrier in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Recently, numerous studies have shown that disruption of the mucus barrier plays an important role in the exacerbation of inflammatory bowel disease, particularly in ulcerative colitis. Alterations in the mucus barrier are well supported by published data and are widely accepted. The use of fluorescence in situ hybridization and Carnoy's fixation has revealed the importance of the mucus barrier...
